The two-day summit, hosted by Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, focused on increasing Africa’s coffee production and global market share, while creating more opportunities for youth and women in the sector. A critical point of discussion was youth participation, as the aging farming population and limited youth engagement pose a major threat to the future of the coffee industry.
The summit explored strategies to attract and retain young people in coffee farming. Tanzania currently contributes about USD 240 million (over TZS 621 billion) to the global coffee market, which is valued at USD 500 billion.
Mbinga District, in Southern Tanzania, produces approximately 15,000 metric tons of Arabica coffee annually, representing about 22% of Tanzania's Arabica output. With its favorable conditions, the district has the potential to exceed 52,000 metric tons per year of clean, high-quality Arabica coffee.
